Nepheline Powder

Nepheline Powder

GP-21 is a ceramic grade nepheline syenite powder with total Na2O and K2O around 14%.It is used when feldspar alone melts too slowly, especially in fast firing, thick glaze, or body formulas that need earlier vitrification.
Nepheline powder GP-21 is active in the kiln. It can help the glaze or body form liquid phase sooner. But whiteness is not its strong point. The fired whiteness is around 61 at 1200°C.
So GP-21 is better suited to formulas where fluxing power matters more than a very white fired color.

Description

GP-21 is useful when the current feldspar system is not giving enough melt at the target temperature.

You may see this in a fast-firing body.

Water absorption stays higher than expected.

The glaze still looks tight.

Or a thick glaze does not open fully before the kiln cycle ends.

This does not mean all the feldspar should be removed.

A better way is to replace part of the current feldspar and run a small comparison. Keep the firing curve unchanged first. Then check water absorption, firing shrinkage, deformation, glaze flow, and fired color.

Start with a low replacement level. Increase it only when the fired result still needs more liquid phase.

GP-21 works as a feldspar replacement for ceramics, but the useful amount is different in every formula. Tile bodies, sanitaryware bodies, and ceramic glazes will not respond in the same way.

Too much nepheline powder may bring extra shrinkage, body movement, or excessive glaze flow. The right level is the one that improves melting without creating a new problem.

GP-21 vs Traditional Feldspar

Property

GP-21 Nepheline powder

Traditional Feldspar

Total alkali

Na2O + K2O around 14%

Usually lower, depending on grade

Melting activity

Starts working earlier

Usually needs more heat

Firing response

Builds liquid phase faster

More gradual melting

Fired whiteness

Around 61 at 1200°C

Often higher in high-purity grades

Best use direction

Fast firing, thick glaze, body vitrification

General body and glaze formulas

Replacement approach

Partial trial first

Often used as the main flux source

Main point to watch

Shrinkage, deformation, glaze flow, fired color

Melting speed and maturity

Use this table to decide whether nepheline syenite powder is worth testing.

It is not a "better feldspar." It is a more active flux. That difference is useful when the formula needs more melt, but it also means the replacement level has to be controlled.

Where Do People Actually Use Nepheline Powder?

Fast-Firing Tile

When the body leaves the kiln a little under-fired, GP-21 may be worth testing.Watch three things: water absorption, firing shrinkage, and tile shape.

Thick Glaze

If the glaze still looks dry or tight at the end of the firing cycle, GP-21 can give the melt more time to open.Keep the first addition small. Too much may make the glaze run. so we said nepheline syenite for ceramic glaze.

Vitreous Sanitaryware Body

GP-21 may help when the body still needs stronger vitrification at the target temperature. But whiteness and deformation must be checked together. Fired whiteness is not the strong point of this grade.

Before Replacing Feldspar

Start small.Check water absorption, shrinkage, shape, glaze flow, and fired color before increasing the GP-21 level.

Its fired whiteness is about 61 at 1200°C, so it is better suited to formulas where fluxing matters more than very high whiteness.

FAQ

Q: Can GP-21 replace all the feldspar?

A: I would not start that way.GP-21 is better tested as a partial feldspar replacement first. Use a small step. Keep the firing curve unchanged. Then compare shrinkage, water absorption, shape, and fired color.
There is no fixed replacement percentage for every formula.

Q: Is GP-21 a good choice for fast-firing tiles?

A: It can be. Nepheline syenite powder for fast-firing tiles makes sense when the current body or glaze is still a little under-melted at the end of a short kiln cycle.
But watch the tile shape. More liquid phase can help maturity, and it can also bring extra movement.

Q: Will GP-21 lower the fired whiteness?

A: It may.The fired whiteness of this grade is around 61 at 1200°C. So GP-21 is not our first choice for a very white body or glaze.
It fits better when fluxing and vitrification matter more than a high-white fired color. it's worth trying.

Before You Change the Feldspar

Start with your current formula.Send us the feldspar level, firing temperature, and fired whiteness target. Add one fired sample photo if you have it.

We will first check whether GP-21 is worth testing in this formula. Then we can suggest a small starting trial instead of asking you to change the whole feldspar system.
